The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Ear Savers to the Rescue

Lisa, with some help from Cottie, has been crocheting up a storm making ear savers to be worn with masks, which are mandatory, and must be worn by all the employees at the UNC Hospitals and Duke. The masks are not only attractive but so helpful to the employees during these difficult days as we battle the Coronavirus. Lisa is one of our heroes during this pandemic. Why Duke, you ask. Lisa wants to keep everyone healthy so we can win our basketball games. Notice the buttons. She's got both basketball and soccer covered. GO HEELS!!!!

"Peace begins with a smile." – Mother Teresa

Our meetings have been canceled through the end of the semester.  We will be staying close to home and all of us who are able will be self-isolating for a while. Reduce your stress level with knitting and/or crochet and prayer. It's an excellent way to pass the time and an excellent way to find peace and relaxation.

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Newman's Craft Fair and Bake Sale

Red and white tablecloths filled the Activity Center, greeting all those who stopped in to purchase Christmas gifts or just take some cookies home for desert. Quiches sold quickly. There were virtually none left after the 9:00 AM liturgy. Soup kozies were gone after the 5:15 liturgy on Saturday evening.

Thank you, Newman parishioners, for your support of our craft fair and bake sale. Proceeds totaled nearly $2,000. Thank you for contributing your hand-crafted creations and baking all those delicious goodies. The success of this sale could not have happened without your support!

Only 24 days until November 16-17 -- our Craft Fair and Bake Sale

Our craft fair and bake sale will be held earlier than expected as posted previously. This year we had a hard time finding a good date for our sale. Thanksgiving is late; football games interfere with our 5:15 very generous and supportive crowd and then there are exams.

November 16-17 the new dates for our sale. All items are hand-crafted. We have beautiful scarves and cowls and moebius scarves, ladder necklaces, doggie bandanas made with reflective yarn for late evening dog-walking, dishtowel toppers with mug rugs, slipper socks, a most lovely shrug. and much more. We will have mini loaves of freshly made breads, cookies, and jars of spiced pecans. There will be some very unique and one-of-a-kind items available only at this sale. Come early for the best selection.

Support the students of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the Alternative Spring Break trips working for social justice.

The Fall Semester is Upon Us

We will be meeting again with our first meeting of the Fall on Thursday, September 5. We will meet on Thursdays, mostly every other Thursday, in the library with one meeting starting at 4:00 PM and another one starting at 5:30 PM, hoping with the earlier time and later time to accommodate those of us who would rather not venture out after dark and those of us who might still be gainfully employed and unable to meet earlier than after 5:00.

We are recruiting new members. Please spread the word about our ministry to those you know who would like to be part of a ministry whose purpose is to support the Newman Center and its mission to serve the students of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with their God-given gifts of yarn crafting.

This is a very good time for us to prepare for our craft fair which will be held at Newman on December 7 & 8. Let's make this one the biggest and best ever!

In the meantime . . . we might reflect on the words of knitting guru, Elizabeth Zimmerman,

"Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit,
and it doesn't hurt the untroubled spirit, either."
