The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry Weekend

On Saturday, June 18, a group of high school students and adults, 23 in all, were commissioned at the 5:15 PM Mass before leaving for Oak Ridge, Tennessee where they would spend the week doing service projects. Before they left on Sunday morning, they were each given a prayer square made by our ministry. The prayer squares signified the love and prayers that went with them from the Newman community. Then, at the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday morning, June 19, Father John blessed the many prayer shawls that had been made by our group and some that are still on the needles. They will be given in celebration and joy, healing and comfort with the love and prayers of the Newman community . There were 21 shawls, blankets, and lapghans blessed that day. We also had an insert in the bulletin with information about our ministry. The weekend was definitely a self-proclaimed Prayer Shawl Ministry Weekend. There was much interest expressed in our ministry and many positive comments.
