The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Our next project

We have been asked to make a prayer cloth for a small faith group-oriented ministry at Newman which begins this spring semester 2012. The group will use the cloth to “record” important moments in their conversion process. In constructing this cloth, we will be making 16 individual 12 inch squares which will be put together to make one 4 x 4 foot prayer cloth. Information on this project was emailed to all our members on December 19. Some important things to remember -

* Squares need to be an exact 12 inches. This will be an enormous help to the individual who generously volunteered to put them together.

* Use a worsted weight acrylic yarn in whatever color you choose and be creative in the stitch and pattern you choose. When we put all 16 of them together, there will be a cloth with a kaleidoscope of texture and color.

Wilma has set the bar pretty high. See a photo of her square below. She is amazing! Mine will be a simple double-seed stitch pattern. I made a swatch for myself - ended up with 60 stitches on my Size 8 needle. So far so good. Of course, I've only done around 8 rows. There are so many different stitches and patterns to choose from. Make it your own. You can find a variety of yarn for this project in my traveling yarn stash - the trunk of my car. Contact me to make arrangements to get whatever you need.

Deadline for our 16 - 12 inch squares is January 31. I can't wait to see what you all are creating.
