The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Our Missionaries for Marcos Fundraiser (Sale)

It was overwhelming. On December 6-7 our ministry sponsored a sale before and after our liturgies. There were a variety of hand knit and crocheted items as well as other hand-crafted goods - "sweet dreams" pillowcases with books, wine cozies, table runners, crane ornaments and more. We had a gourmet bake sale and a raffle for an original watercolor painted by our very own Marty Bucher and a full-size afghan made by our very own Jayne Camporeale.
Full Size Afghan
What did we not sell? Not much - a few baby hats, which will be given to Pregnancy Support Services at Newman's Baby Shower on January 10, and a couple of neck warmers. Because of the generosity of the Newman community and the hard work of all our Prayer Shawl Ministry members, we, knitting ninjas that we are, raised over $2,000 with this sale/fundraiser. Dennis, one of the coordinators of the Mission to Honduras, expressed the missionaries thanks:

"In a recent homily, Fr. Mike spoke of God's urging to comfort His people, the poor. In that quest the Prayer Shawl Ministry of Newman Center did an amazing service for our parish and the Medical Mission to Honduras. Their caring and giving spirit was reflected in the beauty of their knitting and their delicious baked goods, and in the many hours of preparation for the fundraiser. Their efforts gave the community of Newman Center the opportunity to share in the comforting of the people of San Juan Pueblo. One act of Love, multiplied through our community! Padre Marcos and the many families that receive our medical attention will be forever grateful."
