The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Finally we are meeting as scheduled!

We actually have been able to meet this past week. Slowly but surely Spring is arriving in Chapel Hill. We met Tuesday evening in the Newman Library and Wednesday morning/afternoon at The Goat. They were both good meetings. This week we will meet off campus on Tuesday evening.

Brainstorming ways to recruit new members, a suggestion was made to host an "Open House/Clinic" in the fall. Please share your thoughts about this. Comments welcome.

Both Gloria and Marty came to us with a request from Hospice. Seems as though there are always needs for those in Hospice care and their caregivers. Hospice prefers rectangular shawls, suitable for men and women, without fringe. They do like Homespun yarn. However, they will gladly accept shawls made with soft acrylic blends. It would be best to stay away from animal and plant fibers. Marty and Gloria will be able to get them to the right folks.

Projects we can work on right now are many -
  • Prayer Shawls/Lapghans for our needs at Newman
  • Prayer Shawls/Lapghans for Hospice
  • Prayer Squares for our students going on Mission Trips
  • Hats, scarves, etc. for the high school students to give to the folks they serve on their Mission Trip this summer
  • Little stockings or other small ornaments for our Advent Giving Tree (maybe we wouldn't have to knit like ninjas if we did a few throughout the year!)
  • Our fundraiser/sale after Thanksgiving (shall we call it our 2nd Annual?). Our first one was so successful and the Missionaries for Marcos were so appreciative. Let's plan right now to do it again.
  • Whatever else you might find of interest. Take a peak in the Library on our shelf. You'll find lots of books and patterns.
I leave you with a quote from Kahlil Gibran
"It is when you give of yourself that you truly give."
