The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Winter with Newman's Prayer Shawl Ministry

It's been a long time since I've posted on this blog. It certainly has not been because there has been nothing to post. In fact, this winter has been full of exciting happenings within our ministry and at Newman and around Chapel Hill.

We had another Craft Fair and Bake Sale back in December 2018 - a huge success. Profits totaled over $3,000!! 😊 All the proceeds went towards the students Alternative Spring Break trips. This year we had lots of help from our Newman community who donated their hand-crafted items. We had some very beautiful hand turned wooden bowls and intarsia wood working carvings, pottery donated from one of Newman's staff and so much more. We had something for everyone - men, women, children. We even had a donation sent to us all the way from Florida. Our students spent all day Saturday baking and, per usual, our bake sale sold out. We had so many delicious delicacies.

Our Newman community is not only generous in their donations, but overwhelmingly generous in their purchases. For instance, we had a hand-sewn adult apron with a matching children's apron that sold for $75!!!!

After our sale, we worked frantically (like knitting ninjas) to be able to fill our gift bags with baby blankets, hats, and booties for Newman's annual baby shower which was held in January. Our supply of prayer shawls needed to be replenished. The knitting ninjas focused once again on prayer squares to be sure each of our students going on Alternative Spring Break trips and the Awakening retreat had one.

We are now in "catch-up" mode, coasting along and preparing for a future craft fair and anything else that comes our way. Spring has finally arrived in Chapel Hill, which has renewed our vitality and enthusiasm for the life of our prayer shawl ministry. Soon we will be taking a break from our meetings. However, our needles and hooks will not be silent as we pray, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace."

"To love what you do and feel that it matters - how could anything be more fun?"
