The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Spring 2012 - a great time for yarn lovers at Newman

Now it is summer in Carolina. Spring has come and gone. We did a lot of knitting and crocheting this year -
* prayer squares were given to the students when they left on the alternative spring break trips
* more prayer squares went to a group from the diocese who went to Honduras to work with Padre Marcos
* more prayer squares for the students who attended the Awakening retreat in March
* prayer squares for those receiving Confirmation
* prayer squares for the high school students going to spend a week in Appalachia working with families in need

Whew! That's a lot of prayer squares!

Along with all these prayer squares, we have also provided prayer shawls to many. Be sure to check out our journal in the gathering area.

This past week the first group of high school students left for Appalachia. We were able to send along with them several hats and scarves to give to the families they are serving. Thank you all so much for coming through again and "knitting like ninjas" so we could do this.

Paul tells me the prayer cloth we provided to the small faith group this past semester is now hanging in his office. I hope to get a picture to post here soon. In the meantime, take a peak to see the embellishments they added to the cloth on their journey.

Now it appears we are caught up with all our projects. We can relax, grab our hooks and needles and work leisurely this summer. Our schedule has been modified somewhat. We won't be meeting as frequently as we did this past winter. Some of us enjoy working on prayer shawls, some on prayer squares, some on baby blankets, some on hats and scarves. Whatever is most fun for you will be much appreciated. Be sure to check our summer schedule and come to one of our meetings on a Thursday evening, a Tuesday evening, or a Thursday morning if you can. And please remember those of us who are dealing with health problems right now - Peg, Gloria, Marty, and Carol. Let us keep in touch with each other and pray for each other as we enjoy the Carolina blue skies and all the gifts the Lord has given us.

Have a wonderful summer.
