The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Our contribution to the high school mission trip

I did see a few familiar faces (Wilma, Jean, Sue West, Judith - anyone else?) at the 5:15 PM Mass on Saturday, June 15, the evening Father John blessed the group of young students and their advisers who were traveling to Avery County for a week to help the families there who are living in poverty. Cathy McCurry prepared a beautiful basket filled with the hats and scarves and blankets our members made for the folks they would be visiting. I did have the privilege of carrying the basket up to the altar as part of the offertory procession after which Father John acknowledged our ministry. Unfortunately, I did not take a photo. I wish you all could have been there. Thank you all for whatever you may have contributed.

Lord, make me your instrument!
