The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Prayer Square Knitting Ninjas

This Spring brought out the "ninjas" in us. It turned out to be the season for prayer squares and knitting and crocheting like ninjas we were.

A group of 54 students went on Alternative Spring Break Trips this year! Wow! That's a bunch. We were so pleased to support them with the gift of a prayer square as a reminder of the love and prayers that went with them.

And then there were the folks from the diocese who made their annual pilgrimage to Honduras to assist Padre Marcos. Lori Schweikert, Gwen and Tom Konsler from Newman were part of this group.

We made a valiant attempt to give each of the participants of the Lenten Retreat at Newman a prayer square. There ended up being only enough for the morning session participants. The retreat was so well attended. For those who did receive a prayer square, it was a good reminder of the message our retreat master, Roy Petifils, shared with us over these three days. At the closing session, Roy was presented with a prayer shawl made especially for him by our very own Susan Hudson. I do not have a picture to post with that shawl yet, but, hopefully, will have one soon. I'm hoping someone will send one to me. I have been told that it was quite beautiful.

We were knitting like ninjas and will continue to work on prayer squares to build up our inventory. We were asked to provide prayer squares for the Senior Sendoff this week and are able to do that. Thank you all Knitting Ninjas!

It seems as though I am not much of a "picture taker" and always forget about a camera. So I had an idea - why not find a volunteer or two to be our prayer shawl ministry group photographer who will be able to capture those important community moments? Feel free to deluge me with emails expressing your eagerness to be our camera-carrying member!

And now just a gentle reminder of our meeting next week, April 29, on Tuesday rather than Thursday. Dr. Lori Schweikert will join us and share her experiences in Honduras and beyond. It is a "bring a dish to share affair" so don't eat before hand. I will bring my award winning chili or Cheddar/Broccoli Soup and other folks are bringing salads, desserts, etc. We'll start at 6:00 pm to enable all you working folks to get to Newman.  (Okay, please don't ask what awards I won with my chili and soup. Come and see for yourself how good it is!)
