The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

And then we needed even more prayer squares!

Newman invited new members to a "New Member Welcome Lunch"

It happened on a Sunday afternoon, April 26. Newman had sent invitations to close to 100 members who joined Newman in 2014. Each family received a Welcome Bag with lots of goodies and information about our Newman community. In each bag was a prayer square made by our ministry. We, Newman Knitting Ninjas, accomplished our goal and made enough prayer squares to include one in each and every bag! Mary Beth, Susan, and Debbie were so instrumental in finishing this momentous task. Another job well done. Congratulations to all!

Two of the new members were very interested in becoming members of our group. Wonderful! Annette and Antoinette, we look forward to getting better acquainted with you in the Fall when we will start meeting once again.

When I checked our stash in the library, I found it just about non existent! Those prayer squares, though small that they are, obviously used lots of yarn and lots of our stash! All I needed to do was to send an email letting our group know what I "didn't" find when I checked our stash in May. I couldn't believe it. The next time I looked, a week or so later, - the loaves and the fishes again! Bins were replenished. Then, I went up to Macomb, Illinois to say "goodbye" to a good friend who succumbed to cancer. Another friend from Sandusky, Ohio happened to be there for the same reason. Mike brought with him a large container filled with yarn from his wife's stash. Dee, Mike's wife, died two years ago and, God bless her, little did she know, Mike would pass her stash onto our ministry, but I know she would approve. I love you, Dee, and miss you and want you to know how much we appreciate what a yarn lover you were. Our ministry is blessed in so many ways. Jean has a friend she sits with at the 9:00 AM liturgy who comes with a donation of yarn about every week. Her name is Dee, too. Wow! That's amazing. The Spirit is alive and well in Newman and our ministry.
