The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Alive / Vibrant / Hard at Work

How long has it been since I've posted on this blog? Too long. Since October, after our successful bake sale, this blog has been rather quiet. That doesn't mean we have been asleep. Contrary, we have had a few events going on for which our ministry contributed.

We did have another (our third) craft sale in December when we raised over $1,000 for the Honduras Mission. After that, we supported the annual Newman Baby Shower in January and February. Since then we have been working quietly to reevaluate our mission and our ministry. A survey will be sent to all our members very soon to help us move forward in the future.

Prayer squares are always needed. This spring the students will again be embarking on Alternative Spring Break trips to various places around the country. I'm not sure if they will be going abroad this year due to the present climate of our country. Wherever they do go, they will have a prayer square with them to know that our Newman community will be praying for them while they work towards social justice.

We celebrated Ash Wednesday yesterday. During these next six weeks, let us use our creative energy to knit and crochet in contemplative prayer with each stitch we make, whether it be together at a meeting or alone in the warmth of our family and home.

For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.
Matthew 18:20
