The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Lord, Make Me Your Instrument

Newman has found new life as the semester moves steadily forward. After taking a break for the summer, our ministry began meeting again wondering how we would be able to work towards our mission:

To build community while working together in support of the
Newman Catholic Student Center Parish and its ministries.

Before our first meeting, some of us met with our newly appointed Pastoral Associate for Service and Justice, Juan Carlos, to share our thoughts and ideas in accomplishing our mission. As a result, Friar Justin and Juan Carlos surprised us at our next meeting. We discussed our ministry and how we would be able to support our Newman parish.  We now have a full agenda for the year.

1) Prayer Squares for the Awakening Retreat and the Alternative Fall Break Trip
2) Contribute to the Care Bags for the Homeless initiative which Newman is involved in
3) White cloths for those being baptized at the Easter Vigil in 2018.

We are already knitting like ninjas making prayer squares and small scarfs to include in the Care Bags for the Homeless. Fortunate for us ninjas, these small scarfs won't be needed until the weather turns and summer finally decides to leave and we get a bit colder. So far we have over 25 small scarfs, hats, and hand warmers ready to place in the bags.

And then, at our last meeting, we had another surprise, Therese Taxis, Pastoral Associate for Community Development, who came with another request. Would we be willing to do a bit of fundraising? The students who attend the Awakening Retreat and go on the Fall and Spring Break Trips would greatly benefit from whatever we could raise to help pay for these events which have been transformative in the lives of so many of those who attend. Would we be willing to sponsor one of our bake sales with the support and help of the Newman parish, the students, and staff? Of course! Therefore . . .

Not much else going on here at Newman with our Prayer Shawl Ministry (ha), but we are meeting again this evening. I'm wondering if we will have another surprise visitor? If you would be willing to give us a hand (our plates are full), please join us at one of our meetings or contact Christine, the facilitator.  In the meantime, the Peace Prayer of St. Francis seems so meaningful right now, during this month of October when we celebrate his feast day (October 4).

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
