The making of a prayer shawl is a spiritual practice which embodies thoughts and prayers for the receiver. It is a gift freely given with no strings attached. Made in prayer, as prayer, for prayer, the shawls are passed on hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart.

A prayer shawl or blanket embraces the recipient with the unconditional love of the Lord. It is a gift reaching out to those in need of comfort and solace as well as in celebration and joy. Prayer squares are given to those going on mission trips, working for social justice. Many blessings are prayed into every item we make.

Our last meeting until ...

Our meeting was short on Thursday, but good. We were a small group - Janette, Susan, and myself with Wilma and Jean dropping by to leave some goodies. Janette wanted a shawl to give to Anastasia, a member of Newman who is leaving to go back home to the Ukraine. Maybe some of you have met her. She's been here for six years and has been involved in Contemplative Prayer and the choir, and probably lots more. We were so pleased that she happened to be at Mass before the meeting. So Father John came into the library with us as we gave her the shawl and he blessed her. It was a heartwarming moment.

Wilma and Jean dropped in and left us with more prayer squares, a rather large afghan Wilma made a long time ago and no longer needs, and some prayer shawls made by her friend Peggy at Covenant House. I put the afghan in the cupboard so it would be handy to give to the high schoolers as they travel to Avery County. They told me they would welcome whatever we would be able to send with them. I am not sure when they will be leaving but I will find out soon and let you all know.

Our ministry will be "on vacation" in June and July. We'll meet again in August. I hope to continue to post occasionally and I hope you will all keep in touch with each other. I'll check the cupboard periodically to see if anyone leaves anything during these next two months. I also hope to be able to see the Wesley Center. Maybe there will be a space for us. We all know the power of prayer. We would so welcome a quiet place to spend some time knitting, crocheting, just meditating with our hooks and needles.

We'll start up again with our meetings probably in late August. Your thoughts and suggestions regarding our ministry are always welcome. Some suggestions we've come up with so far
  • a yarn bombing of Newman to welcome the students back
  • an altar cloth
In the meantime, baby items for Pregnancy Support Services might make good summer knitting.

Shalom for now.
